Rory Christie’s pig and dairy farm sits on a picturesque corner of the windswept coast off Dumfries and Galloway in southwest Scotland. But the rugged beauty does little to attract workers.
Christie, who runs the family farm with his brother, is one of many business owners in remote parts of Scotland struggling to find labour. After failing to attract any local applicants he is now trying to sponsor workers from as far away as the Philippines, a time-consuming and expensive process. “It’s incredibly worrying and in many ways stressful,” he said.
Candidates “think we are in the wilderness because we are so far from anywhere,” he added. “It’s extremely challenging to find the right people.”
