Three decades ago, I spent part of my gap year working as a volunteer on a vaccination and maternity health project in villages scattered around Pakistan’s Sindh province.
As health programmes went, it seemed quite successful. But there was a slight issue: whenever our medical truck arrived in a village after bumping across the Sindh desert, we had only a vague idea of how many patients to expect.
Yes, there were population records in government offices, but these tended to list only (male) heads of households. So when we arrived somewhere, we would simply shout out an appeal for women to come out of their huts.
