The UK’s regulation of mobile app stores is lagging “well behind” other countries, according to the head of Fortnite creator Epic Games, as courts and antitrust agencies around the world crack down on Apple and Google over the fees they charge to developers.
Tim Sweeney, founder and chief executive of North Carolina-based Epic, told the Financial Times that last month’s move by the Competition and Markets Authority to delay a key decision about whether Apple should let developers sell software and digital services to iPhone users without going through its App Store was a “blunder”.
It meant British iPhone and iPad owners would have to wait longer than players in other countries before Fortnite — one of the world’s most popular games — returned to their devices, Sweeney said.
