Putin’s invasion has strengthened Ukrainian nationalism and melded east and west Ukraine. This has been reinforced by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and his armies of citizen-patriots. But in truth, Ukrainian identity has long relied on a complex web of cultural, linguistic and social loyalties and traditions.
