Chun Doo-hwan, a South Korean general who as president authorised a massacre of pro-democracy protesters, has died at the age of 90, official sources said.
Chun died at his home in western Seoul on Tuesday morning after suffering from chronic ailments, the state-owned Yonhap news agency reported.
Chun seized power through a military coup in 1979 and ruled until 1988, when he peacefully handed over the presidency to Roh Tae-woo after the first free election in decades.
