Vancouver neighbours and friends pledged portions of their homes and, in one case, retirement income to support a bail request from Huawei’s chief financial officer, who has been detained following an extradition request from the US.
The offers came during the third day of bail hearings for Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested while changing planes in Vancouver on December 1. US prosecutors are seeking her for alleged violations of sanctions targeting Iran.
David Martin, her lawyer, addressed concerns raised the previous day in court about the eligibility of her husband, known as “Carlos”, to post surety worth C$15m, representing two Vancouver homes and C$1m cash, because he has a visitor’s visa to Canada.
