Merlin Entertainments, the British theme parks operator, is rapidly expanding in China to serve a middle class hungry for more varied tourist attractions, and is adapting to local restrictions — such as a ban on fake blood and gore.
The company this week opened an attraction in Shanghai devoted to Peppa Pig, a British cartoon both popular and controversial in China, and a 2,000 sq m “Shanghai Dungeon” on the city’s main tourist thoroughfare this week.
But, unlike the London facility that spawned the China version, mentioning ghosts and historical killers is off limits.
