App stores have been told to register in China from this week as Beijing continues its crusade against “illegal information” and tightens its grip on mobile apps in the country.
Lax management had resulted in “the dissemination of illegal information [that] goes against the rights of users and increases the frequency of app security risks”, the Cyberspace Administration of China said on its website.
The new regulations, published late on Friday, come just a few weeks after Apple bowed to the mainland authorities’ request to remove the New York Times app from its App Store in China.
