A great choice to promote Lanc?me in Hong Kong, Cantonese pop star Denise Ho proved a disaster just over the border in mainland China.
The luxury skincare brand cancelled a marketing event due to feature Ho in Hong Kong next week after a backlash from Chinese consumers angry with the singer’s support for the Dalai Lama and the Hong Kong democracy movement, which are seen as threats to China.
But while Hong Kongers accused it of “kowtowing”, analysts say it is little wonder L’Oréal, the French cosmetics group that owns Lanc?me, gave in to threats of a boycott in China, its second-biggest market.
