China and the US will work together on deportations and asset seizures related to corruption and international crime, China’s foreign ministry said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping launched a sweeping anti-corruption campaign over the past three years that has ensnared dozens of senior Communist party officials. But China has chafed at what it views as lack of co-operation from the US and other western countries in hunting down Chinese fugitives and their dirty assets abroad.
The US and China do not have a formal extradition treaty, due in part to concerns over human rights and the fairness of China’s judicial system. But in the days leading up to Mr Xi’s visit to the US last week, Washington deported several Chinese criminal suspects to China, including one of the country's “100 most wanted” fugitives.
