Chinese premier Li Keqiang arrived at the scene of last week’s twin blasts in Tianjin on Sunday as local officials sought to calm protests by families of the victims and displaced residents.
The official death toll has more than doubled to 112, with another 95 people confirmed missing on Sunday morning. Most of those unaccounted for are firefighters in what officials have called the deadliest incident for China’s military-controlled fire brigades in more than 65 years.
The explosions occurred on August 12 at a warehouse for toxic chemicals including sodium cyanide, which can be lethal if ingested or inhaled. Chinese authorities said on Sunday that the disaster zone was safe and secure, denying earlier state media reports of large-scale evacuations.
