Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has hit back angrily at court accusations against him of corruption, denying breaking any laws and alleging political manipulation of the judiciary to destroy him.
“I am profoundly shocked by what has happened,” he said in his first television interview since losing power to Fran?ois Hollande two years ago. “I have never committed any act contrary to republican principles or the law. There has been an attempt to humiliate me.”
His riposte came hours after he was placed under formal judicial investigation after facing more than 12 hours of questioning in police custody on Tuesday, an unprecedented step against a former president that threatens his prospects of making a political comeback.
