China will expel a prominent artist for an alleged visa violation when he is released from a detention facility later this month, according to Australia’s department of foreign affairs and trade.
Guo Jian, an Australian citizen, was detained by Chinese police at his Beijing studio on June 1, one day after an interview with him about the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests appeared in the Financial Times.
“Chinese authorities have advised [that] Mr Guo was detained on a visa-related matter,” a department spokesman said. “We understand Mr Guo will be detained for 15 days and then required to depart China.”
