Japan could have its third leader in a year after Ichiro Ozawa, the scandal-ridden Democratic party heavyweight, said that he would challenge Naoto Kan, prime minister.
The controversial but extremely influential politician said he would run against Mr Kan in the party’s leadership contest on September 14. By entering the race, Mr Ozawa has brought to the fore a deep split that has plagued the ruling DPJ since it came to power in a historic election last September.
“I decided to enter the race?.?.?.?after former prime minister Yukio Hatoyama said he would like to support me fully,” Mr Ozawa said after meeting the former leader.
