Argentina yesterday summoned the Chinese ambassador to express concern over Beijing's threat to halt imports of soya oil, expected to be worth $2bn this year, from the South American country.
China says it will start enforcing the ban this month because Argentine oil fails to meet its quality standards, but it has also acknowledged that the move is a reprisal for Argentine anti-dumping measures against its textile and other sectors in the last couple of years.
“China is the biggest client we have and we are one of its biggest suppliers,” said Ernesto Fernández Taboada, executive director of the Argentine-Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
