Supporters of Britain’s two main right-wing political parties are significantly more anti-immigrant and opposed to racial diversity than those who back Donald Trump’s Republican party, according to polling comparing social and political attitudes in the US and UK.
Despite Trump’s demonisation of undocumented Americans as “drug dealers and rapists” and a high-profile programme of deportations since taking office, the survey by the National Centre for Social Research found UK voters to be significantly more anti-foreigner than their counterparts on the right and the left in the US.
Two-thirds of those who voted for either the Conservatives or Reform UK at the 2024 election said they were “uncomfortable” with hearing foreign languages in public — compared with less than half of those who said they would vote, or lean towards voting, for Trump.
