The Federal Reserve is expected to end a three-year phase of quantitative tightening this week, easing pressures on banks amid concerns that funding is getting too tight in money markets.
Policymakers will begin debating the issue on Tuesday after some bank lenders earlier this month tapped a federal backstop funding facility at levels last seen during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Fed has allowed more than $2tn in US Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities to roll off its balance sheet since beginning the QT programme in June 2022, tightening funding conditions.
